Forget Me Knot #1
Angela Tam’s Year of the Snake artwork.
Created in collaboration with the City of Sydney’s Lunar New Year Festival 2025.
Forget Me Knot is a tribute to my younger self.
Growing up as a Chinese Australian in a neighbourhood where my culture often felt out of place, I experienced a sense of disconnection and even shame around my heritage. Over the years, I began to find my way back—through food, through language—but it was my art that became the most meaningful way to keep discovering and honour my identity.
This series of illustrated banners feature snakes intertwined in the shapes of Chinese knots, a symbol of luck, intuition and connection, woven together by stories across generations. Each knot tells a tale—of those who came before us and of those finding their place today.
This work reminds me to embrace the threads of my heritage and find beauty in reimagining it in my own voice. For others, especially young Chinese Australians who may feel the weight of disconnection, I hope it inspires you to celebrate culture in ways that are meaningful, personal, and unapologetically your own.
